WHALE WARS: Tonight On Animal Planet

Published on: November 7, 2008 – 11:49 am by Jillian Madison Comment

I just read about a new series called “WHALE WARS” that premieres tonight on Animal Planet. It’s a show about animal loving, somewhat psychotic people who sail around Antarctica on a ship named the SEA SHEPHERD, trying to prevent Japanese fishermen from killing whales. It sounded mildly interesting, so I watched the promo video. And now I’m just flabbergasted.

How do you stop a  5,000 ton Japanese fishing ship from hunting whales? Why, you pull your ship up reeeaaallly close next to it and throw flash grenades at them. Then, you harass them until they fire their automatic weapons AT YOUR HEAD. The action is so intense, Captain Paul Watson gets shot at one point on the premiere episode. Um, I hope the first mate knows how to sail.

Bottom line: Captain Watson, who was thrown out of Greenpeace for being too extreme, is a certifiable nutjob. In another video, he talks about having some of his crew members illegally board a Japanese ship and be taken hostage, to draw more attention to his cause. He asked for volunteers, and was met with CRICKETS.

Yes, I’m all for saving the lives of innocent animals,  but there has to be a better way. Until then, these guys need a better plan… or at least some better weapons.

In other news,  did you know a whale’s brain is bigger than a CAR?
