Food Network Picked Up “Big Daddys House”

Published on: September 29, 2008 – 12:45 pm by Jillian Madison Comment

For those of you wondering what happened to Big Daddy’s House on the Food Network, it was not canceled. It’s just on hiatus. The awful show has been picked up for a full season, and new episodes will begin annoying you airing in January 09.

Aaron McCargo’s win on the Next Food Network Star competition set the blog world abuzz with posts of disbelief and shock. Week after week on the show, he faded into the background, and even worse, he always seemed moments from wetting his pants whenever the camera started rolling. He was awkward, nervous, and uncomfortable to watch.

His performances on the first 6 episodes of Big Daddy’s House were no different. He talked too fast, he seemed nervous and inexperienced, and his English was terrible. He annoyingly talked about himself in the 3rd person (”Big Daddy marinades his meat for 2 days,” or “Big Daddy uses only the freshest cheeses”). Oh, and by the way, his food looked… REVOLTING. He simply melted cheese and butter together and poured it over stuff, and expected the people watching at home to swoon.

Bottom line: McCargo isn’t entertaining, enchanting, or engaging. He bores me to tears, and I won’t be watching his show.

To those of you who will be trying his recipes, may I suggest you purchase some of these before doing so?

Happy eating!

I watched one episode of the show and it was a train wreck. It is the worst show on Food Network… worse than Semi Homemade with Sandra Lee.

I think people are so rude if they think they can do better try it see if they can make it which I doubt. Some of the so called chefs on the show are drunks and they slap things together and they also have help in the back stage to clean it up. Some the the cooks should not be even in the kitchen they should be reading a recipe book or watching what someone is doing.
This man had a hard time to get were he is he may be nervous or a little scared but that comes with the territory he just has to learn to deal with it.
All the none believers that have so much to hem and haw about shouldn’t watch it if its that bad and get a life some of you need one bad. Think about the idiot your Mccain and x hook that your country are trying to put in office some more morons and idiots this is what this country is about? Take that to the bank oh you won’t get it back!

I can get past the gross looking food and I can get past all the sticks of butter. What I can’t get past is his awful personality. I think I speak for the haters here when I say: he is just boring. It’s not fun or entertaining to watch someone stumble through a cooking show!!! Especially when the outcome looks so damn unedible.

Cindy…take a breath….I watch FoodTV to get away from all the political b/s…Why bring McCain into the mix? Big Daddy’s House was ok…and anyone could look at the first six episodes of any “Food TV STAR” and see the same nervousness…It takes time. He will do just fine.

I like the show, his food looked fantastic. I’m glad the network is helping people succeed in what they love. Stop being a hater, you are only poisoning yourself with ugly feelings.Give the guy a chance to acquire more knowledge and experience!

What is the matter with you people. Some people are just haters and wish that you could accomplish half of what he has accomplised. I loved his show and had been looking foward to watching him. I love how down to earth he is and YES!he has a great personality, and as for the english if you have no soul you would not relate. I am not talking about ethnicity either. When you cook you have to have soul to cook and it is not from the way you speak you have to be for real and honest from the heart and I feel like he has a lot of soul in the kitchen and his recipes come strait from the heart.

I agree with a lot of you. He is down to earth, and he is entertaining. Is he the best…yet? No, but he’s trying hard and like all of us in new jobs, it takes time to get used to it and learn from it! Give him a break! I like his casual, caring, personality! It’s something different and I’m proud of him for going all the way and making it! I’ve missed the last few weeks of no episodes and I’m pleased to hear he will be back in a few months!

Congrats Aaron. You deserved to win. You have a lot of talent, skill, personality and a nice vibe. It was obvious that the judges LOVED the BIG taste and flavor in your recipes.

There is obviously a market for your good old fashioned, great tasting, comfort, SOULfull food.

I’ve watched your first couple of shows of “Big Daddy’s House” and the food looked good… too good! I believe it would work best for people like me who like to avoid saturated fats, carbs and the like if you would suggest the low-cal, healthy options for your dee-lish, down-home dishes.

Thanks! You rock. Keep doing what you are doing, it gets better and better!

OMG! It truly sickens me to hear such negativity. Here is a man getting a shot at his dream of a lifetime, and he is being criticized for not jumping in and looking like a pro. I think his food looks incredible, and not trying to be funny, but MOST of his style and overall presentation is more catered to the African American culture. The taste always outdoes the look. Also, some of the top food execs and critics were blown away and extremely pleased by his knowledge of food and what originality he could bring to the table. Literally! It was good enough to win his own show so let him get in his groove and over time he will become more comfortable as he gains more confidence. Like a fine wine, it ages and becomes exquisite as time passes. Keep up the good work Aaron and I can’t wait to record your new episodes this winter. Haters, turn the damn channel or wait until YOUR fav Food Network Star comes on.

    Jill,

You sound like the typical white girl who will criticize just for the hell of it. It’s such a shame that people in this country can’t get a break without people like you finding every opportunity to bring them down. If you were to watch some of Rachel Ray’s first episodes, she had lots of growing pains. Now she’s great. The same thing will happen to Aaron, because he’s real people. He’s not out trying to impress all of you perfect people. I love Paula Deen, but come on, she’s the countryest (if that can be a word for a moment) star on the Food Network, and she doesn’t pronounce all of her words properly either. But you know what? That’s why we all love her (black and white people), she’s real people. But what do you know; you probably never did anything that required courage in your entire life. You’re probably a loser, at everything you do. There’s no more room for people like you… LOSER.

HOLLA…you don’t want to mess with me.

I LOVE AARON MCCARGO SHOW BIG DADDY’S KITCHEN PEOPLE WHO DON’T LIKE THE SHOW ARE JUST SHOWING THEIR IGNORANT AND RACIST ATTITUDE BECAUSE HEIS A BLACKMAN

  21. EXCLAIMOTION
    October 18th, 2008

Oh I loathe people who play the race card. There’s this annoying bitch who does it at my office all the time. “I had to go on break second because I’m black!” or “Shirley had 5 balloons at her office party but I only had 4. It’s because i’m black!”

To all of you, I say SHUT THE F-CK UP. To Deborah, I say SHUT THE F-CK UP. Aaron McCargo sucks a huge, flaming pile of ass. And it has nothing to do with his skin color. If you suck, you suck. Regardless of your skin color.

And for the record, your declaration that “people love Rachael Ray” shows how out of touch you are. NO ONE Likes Rachael Ray. She’s the butt of every late night comedian’s joke. She’s annoying, too.

So here’s a message to the world, if you have no intelligent comeback, stop using “THE RACE CARD” and stop saying “YOU’RE JUST JEALOUS” because neither are true.

I usually watch Top Chef, which is fantastic. One day I was looking at the Food Network channel and saw your contest. I was angry when my two favorite finalists, didn’t win and they gave Big Daddy a second chance. Garza, (I believe was her name) is a fantastic chef, way better than Big Daddy! I also loved the comic (can’t remember his name) even if he didn’t cook as well, he could learn that weeks menu! I knew that it was a black thing giving Big Daddy a chance. I couldn’t believe it! I promised not to watch Big Daddy’s House. Unfortunately, my curiosity took the better of me and I watched it. I actually like his show. He is real and not phoney. So what if he uses tons of butter, — his cooking is for real people like us southerners. I didn’t see that he was nervous. I thought he was real smooth. You should alternate and have all 3 on the show!

    thank you,

The editing helps this show, but it’s still a low-end Food Network program that deserves to be on Saturday mornings at 5:00 in the morning or something. Only the editing makes him look good or “funny” or whatever indiscriminate viewers want to believe. He’s average at best, and won’t be around for long. He was only funny once on “Next Food Network Star,” when he was up for elimination, and begged for his life by weeping and saying something like “Mah son done run away,” causing the judges to look away in embarrassment. His poor son must have seen the show.

  33. TinyTam
    November 19th, 2008

Folks – I’d like everyone to take a chill pill here! The reason the Food Network is so great is there’s so much variety. If you don’t like the food or show topic or whatever, SIMPLY DON’T WATCH!!! I don’t always like what Rachel Ray cooks but I still enjoy her show. Every personality is not the same!! Regardless of race or style of cooking, everyone should understand that we are a diverse country and the shows on Food Network and any other have a right to reflect the broader community and offer different perspectives that we should all respect. Please try to keep this discourse civil and intelligent!

I will never cease to be amazed at how cruel people can be to each other.
I’m an “old” white woman, and I adored Aaron McCargo, Jr from the first time I saw him. He just comes across as a very nice young man. I don’t think his son running away is good fuel for burning him! I just pray that the kid is okay and I sincerely hope he’s home by now. The remark about this was so unkind. Being a southerner, I also find it unkind to make fun of our accent–remember, to us “YOU” are the one with the funny accent!

I was once on a local tv show, and it is extremely nerve-wracking, even though I knew that most likely only my family was seeing the program! I think with time he will be fine.
I see a lot of food that does not appeal to me; I either change the channel or do something else while it’s being prepared. Some of the stars personalities do not appeal to me; I do the same–change channel or otherwise occupy my time. I’d hate to see any of them lose their jobs; obviously SOMEONE likes their food, their show, and them, or they wouldn’t be on. All tv networks are a business, and they will not air shows that do not draw in viewers; this is how they make their money!
    Have a heart, folks!

When I saw THIS article under “most commented on”, I had to come see HOW that happened. Annnnnd now I see. Wow. Just… Wow.

Seriously? Lighten up a smidgen. We’re bombarded daily with news of horrible shit happening not only in our towns, our states, our country, but the entire world.

Sometimes it’s AMUSING to enjoy hating on something frivolous like this. I don’t think this article has brought Big Daddy to his kneees. It was light-hearted humorous hating. I don’t think Jill’s got the gun loaded and cocked and ready to blow Big Daddy’s head off. I *think* she’s just amused that this season of the show really struggled with the talent so much that they were left with not much of a choice. Kind of like how it’s funny when American Idol starts pushing some reaaaalllly crappy singers on us trying to convince us that they are AWESOME, when in reality they are probably crapping their pants hoping they don’t have to pimp them out for the 5 year contract (I think it’s 5 years for the winner, right? And 1 for the top Ten? I forget…)

I’m just so damn glad that crazy bitch with the squinty eyes didn’t win. I swear, just watching her made me shake like a chihuahua with no sweater. I’m always too “in tune” with anybody around me, and even though she was on tv and not in my house (thank you, God)… her nerves came straight through that television and just made ME a nervous wreck.

And HELL no I’m not gonna stop watching. I’m fairly sure that if I actually took the time to make a list and check it twice… most of what I watch right now… I watch because it’s so much fun to hate on! The pickings are slim for good tv right now, folks… gotta take it where you can get it. And if me laughing at squinty eyed woman try to make it through a commercial brings me joy, WHY/HOW does that hurt YOU?? Let me have my jollies, please.

I did kind of like that one youngish guy (sorry, too much time lapsed and I forgot his name… I wanna say Adam, but not positive) only because he used to own his own restaurant and he had the balls to name it “The Smoked Joint”. Haha! But I wouldn’t want to watch him on a show for 30 mins. Would I eat his smoked meat? Heck yeah (and not in the dirty way) (well mayb… nevermind) His cooking style appealed to me, but his “entertainment” level left a lot to be desired.

I didn’t think any of them had what it takes to have their own show that last season. Not yet, anyway… I realize they will grow and learn and improve, yadda yadda. But since Food Network is obviously hurting for talent (look at it… every single chef has like… 5 damn shows now! Surely you can find more chefs. Hell I know an EXCELLENT pastry chef, I’ll hook ya up, Food Network!) they couldn’t very well end the season with “Uhhhh ok so here’s how it is. None of you are good enough to have a show. We totally screwed up when picking contestants. Sorry we wasted your time. Happy Eating!! Now leave.”

Big Daddy was just the lesser of the evils. I do not think his show will be a permanent fixture of Food Network. I think they’ll give him as much as they promised him, and not a bit more.

Besides, everybody knows he only won because he was black, duh! (kidding… back away)

    Personal Note to the blogger:
Are you sure you dislike the show itself, or you just dislike THE PERSON? I’ve seen so many shows on the food network that are way worst than Aarons, but yet everyone is attacking this guy. Seems a bit racist if you ask me!

Everyone saying bad things about him and his show needs to get a clue. Its not easy standing infront of a camera with MILLIONS OF PEOPLE WATCHING YOUR EVERY MOVE. Before Criticizing the man, I’d like to see you all step into his shoes and run a show for a week.
    Its not that easy!

I’m black and Big Daddy’s show sucks… I like seeing the visibility of the brotha on the Food Network… but he hasn’t cooked ONE thing I would eat… WAAAYYYYY too much grease and I’m a big boy. There are other blacks on TV that actually cook up some nice dishes… My boy G. Garv, The Neelys and I’ve even gotten a couple of recipes from Sunny Anderson (Did I just name all the black people on cooking show ?).- but i can do w/o big Daddy.

I was surprised this guy won. I agree with you completely that he’s boring and awkward in front of the camera. He just doesn’t draw me in and make me want to watch at all. It’s all a big act and doesn’t seem natural, which is a turn-off. I don’t hate the guy. He seems like he’s a nice guy. I just don’t think he belongs in front of a camera with his own cooking show.

Some people just should not be on TV. Not Hating on Aaron, he just needs to find his nitch. his own Cooking show is just not it. I would like to see him try cooking with the Neeleys, or Guy. Someone big needs to mentor him. Nothing wrong with constructive critism, and being humble. TV comes natural to some, and not so natural to others. Being comfortable in your own skin is a plus. Flashy jewelry does not do it for me. I like to watch realism on tv. So sorry Aaron, u just don’t cut it for me.
Pair up with a Big Name! NOT BOBBY FLAY! His ego is so big, I swear his head appears to be growing, and pilsating. You could never shinethrough with him. Guess u know by now I do not like Bobby Flay Anymore, he has become transparent. Paula Dean would be a better iron chef!
Keep it real and be kind…………

First of all, I think the blacks on the food net work are doing very well and the negative comments are only coming from negative people. Black people dominate just about every position there is to hold, besides it being inevitable, don’t forget who taught you bland eaters how to flavor. How can you have any show about food and don’t have black people?? You people need to find something els to do, oh it won’t be on top!! We got that!!!!!!!!!!

You ought to be ashamed of yourselves. Big Daddy is new to the scene, give him a chance. His meals are made with items easily found in the grocery stores. I love the home feel of his show and his recipes. I work every other weekend but look forward to seeing him on my off weekend on t.v.. He claims to be a cook, not an entertainer or an actor, give him a break. He is learning and coming along well.He is a handsome man to view with that priceless smile, and I love mushrooms and onions, which he often uses. With time he will get better and better hold on!

I agree with the writers post. He is very uncomfortable to watch. I feel like he is yelling or scolding at me. He is constantly bragging about how good his food is but it looks really disgusting. When I watch his show, I just have this really uncomfortable feeling, unlike the other food network shows, which are very soothing to watch.
